Get Curious about different mediums

One of the biggest myths about painting is that every time you sit down with a brush, you should create something worth framing.

The truth is, the artists who improve the fastest are usually the ones who spend the most time experimenting.

Watercolour is a wonderful teacher because it encourages us to let go of perfection. It reminds us that some of the most beautiful effects happen when we stop trying to control every brushstroke.

If you've been feeling stuck creatively, here are a few simple exercises you can try today.

1. Play with Water

Paint a simple square of clean water onto your paper.

Now touch the edge with a brush loaded with colour.

Watch how the pigment moves.

Try different amounts of water and notice how dramatically the results change.

2. Let Colours Meet

Choose two colours you love.

Paint one beside the other while they're still wet and allow them to flow together naturally.

Instead of forcing the blend, simply observe what happens.

Watercolour often creates combinations we could never intentionally paint.

3. Explore Your Brush

See how many different marks you can make using just one brush.

Use the point.

Lay it flat.

Press harder.

Lift gently.

You'll quickly discover an incredible variety of shapes and textures.

4. Paint Without a Plan

This can feel uncomfortable at first, but it's one of the best creative exercises.

Forget about painting a "real" subject.

Instead, make marks.

Add colour.

Build layers.

See where your imagination takes you.

You might be surprised by what appears.

Remember Why You Started

Most of us didn't begin painting because we wanted perfection.

We started because creating made us feel calm, curious and happy.

Those feelings are still there.

Sometimes they just need a little room to return.

The next time you have ten spare minutes, grab your watercolours and simply play.

No expectations.

No pressure.

Just curiosity.

Because every confident artist started exactly the same way - with one brush, a little paint, and the courage to experiment.
